Reflecting on 2020
message from the president
I look back on 2020, it is impossible not to reflect on the pain and loss that COVID-19 caused across our communities and the world. The toll of losing lives, jobs, connections to friends and family, and access to the activities that fuel our health and wellness continued to bear down on us all. Despite those immense challenges, we have so much to be grateful for at Mercy Housing Northwest.
In a year punctuated by crisis and uncertainty, MHNW ensured the residents who call our communities home were able to stay safe and housed. What’s more, our staff quickly responded to the new and increased needs of residents as their homes became the center of everything.
MHNW communities received essential help thanks to you. It is only because of the generosity of donors and our community partners that we were able to adapt and sustain the critical Resident Services for which Mercy Housing is known. Our team provided food and financial assistance, ensured equitable access to technology, helped students and parents navigate digital learning, and kept residents healthy. We were able to build connections across communities with virtual community meetings and online activities for kids.
I want to thank everyone in the MHNW community whose contributions ensure that access to affordable housing continues and expands. Thank you to donors, sponsors, corporate and community partners, and our volunteers — especially our Board of Directors, staff, and Mercy Housing residents. And a very special thanks to everyone who attended our first-ever virtual Power of Home event this year!

Thank you. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, staff, and the people who call Mercy Housing home – thank you. It’s true, these stories of positive impact wouldn’t happen without you, but that rings truer than ever for 2020.
We have all experienced the incredible disruption, fear, and loss that the pandemic brought to Mercy Housing communities, our nation, and the world. Low-income and BIPOC communities continue to bear the brunt of the effects of the pandemic. Thanks to you, the power of home has been more important than ever for the kids, families, seniors, and veterans that have access to stable affordable housing.
Thanks to your generosity, Mercy Housing Northwest could pivot, bolster, and sustain the array of wraparound services that make our communities more than just an address. We’ve been able to provide increased and critical food relief, financial assistance, healthcare help, and education support to MHNW residents because of donors and funders like you.
I know just how transformative access to a stable home and a supportive community can be. At this year’s virtual Power of Home event, I shared my story of growing up in subsidized housing in Olympia. My mother was able to work and take care of me and my siblings as a single parent. Access to safe, affordable housing is lifesaving and transformational.
MHNW amplifies that impact by serving the whole person with culturally responsive, flexible, and accessible Resident Services that positively impacts generations to be healthy and vibrant.
We look forward to the future, gathering together and embracing our families, friends, and communities in person one day soon. Despite all the hurdles of 2020, Mercy Housing Northwest continues to provide high-quality, service-enriched housing for vulnerable people across Washington and Idaho.
